Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, has assured that his administration would continue to maintain the enviable status of the state as the education capital of Nigeria.
He gave the assurance at the 27th Convocation ceremony of the 2016/2017 academic session of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.
Amosun, who said that qualitative education is a major priority of his administration, noted that the efforts are beginning to yield great benefits.
According to him, the university is now at an enviable position in the comity of higher institutions, commending the management of the institution for the feat.
Enjoining the graduands to be good ambassadors of the university and the state at large, wherever they find themselves in the future, he reiterated his administration’s continued support to the institution to enable it attain greater heights.
The governor, who also performed the turning of the sod for the construction of the new Senate Building for the university, which he assured would be commissioned during the 28th convocation, charged both the graduates and the students, not only to guard the enviable name of the institution jealously, but also protect the facilities.
On her part, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the university, Mrs. Mosun Bello-Olusoga, commended the efforts of the immediate past members of the council on the lofty achievements recorded during their tenure, assuring that the incumbent council would sustain the progress made so far as well as improve on it.
Bello-Olusoga noted that the university has enjoyed rapid infrastructural development in the last six years, because of the judicious utilisation of funds from the state government and urged the graduands to follow their passion and seek excellence in all they do.
In his welcome address, Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Ganiyu Olatunde, while commending the Amosun government for creating an enabling environment for the education sector to thrive in the state, stated that the university has continued to experience sustained academic development and uninterrupted academic activities in the last six years.
He revealed that a total of 5,040 graduands were awarded first degrees, diplomas, postgraduate diplomas, higher and doctoral degrees.
Olatunde added that four outstanding Nigerians, the Alake and Paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba (Dr.) Adedotun Gbadebo, the Founder and Chairman of Coronation Capital Market, Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukuede, the Chairman, Board of Directors, First Bank Plc, Mrs. Ibukun Awosika and Professor Toyin Falola from the University of Texas, Austin, U.S.A. were also conferred with honorary awards for their contributions to the development of Ogun State, Nigeria and humanity at large.
